What an Orifice Does

An orifice is the small brass fitting that meters gas into a burner or pilot. Its hole size sets how much gas flows, which determines the flame and the heat output. The wrong size produces a weak or yellow flame, poor heating, or an over-fire condition, and can cause incomplete combustion that produces carbon monoxide.

Natural Gas vs Propane

Propane carries more energy per unit than natural gas and is supplied at higher pressure, so it needs a smaller orifice to deliver the same heat. Types of Orifice

Burner spuds — fixed-size fittings for open top burners
Hood orifices — adjustable fittings used on oven and broiler burners
Pilot orifices — very small fittings that keep a standing pilot stable, sized for a specific gas type

Don’t Clean an Orifice With Wire or a Drill

Orifices clog with grease and carbon over time, causing weak flames. It’s tempting to clear them with a wire or drill bit, but that easily enlarges the hole and causes over-firing. Replacing a clogged orifice is the safe way to restore the correct gas flow.

Finding the Right Orifice

Orifices are sized by drill number, usually stamped on the fitting — and a smaller drill number means a larger hole. For example, part A29019 is a #48 orifice hood for an “I” burner on natural gas. Match the drill number, gas type and your equipment’s model number, found on the data plate. If the markings are worn, send us your model and serial number and we’ll identify the correct orifice.
